Phase I

Study of the influence of climatic factors on growth and adaptive characters in Norway spruce, European Silver fir and Scots pine trials.


  • Creating the biometric, geographic and climate database for long term trials with Norway spruce, Silver fir and Scots pine provenances and progenies, established in Romania;
  • Highlighting the main influence factors on the studied characters;
  • Evaluation the local adaptation in genetic tests and at the level of species areas;
  • Calculation of the climatic parameters at the natural range of species in Romania for the period 1961 – 2013.

Phase II

Study of the genetic variation of the quantitative and phenological characters in Silver fir, Norway spruce and Scots pine trials. 


  • assessing the magnitude of the adaptive genetic variation at the intrapopulation, interpopulation and provenance regions levels;
  • estimation the genetic parameters of the adaptive variation;
  • evaluation the local adaptation in genetic experiments;
  • establishing a new set of Silver fir progeny trials in different site conditions, in Campina, Comandau and Fancel Forest Districts.

Phase III

Evaluation of the genetic structure of the Silver fir, Norway spruce and Scots pine populations.


  • evaluation the genetic diversity in natural and artificial populations;
  • analysis the spatial genetic structures by interpopulation and intrapopulation evaluations;
  • knowledge the genetic specificity of some populations of interest for future;
  • highlighting the vulnerable populations in term of narrowing of the genetic diversity.

Phase IV

  • Determination the genetic parameters at inter and intrapopulational level for Norway spruce, Silver fir and Scots pine populations (continuation);
  • Determination the spatial genetic structures of the analysed species (continuation);
  • Determination the transfer functions for the studied species;
  • Elaboration the genetic – ecological impact models and the prediction maps;
  • Identification the vulnerable regions and populations in the context of climate changes, according with analysed scenarios;
  • Identification the valuable population with high genetic diversity and phenotypic plasticity;
  • Evaluation the impact of the forest management on the genetic diversity and adaptive capacity of populations to climate changes;
  • Elaboration the technical recommendations for the forest practice.

Technical Recommendations:

  1. 1. Considering the increase of the average of annual temperature by 7.3% at the natural range of Silver fir and by 8.9 % for Norway spruce, respectively, concomitantly with decrease in precipitations, the high genetic variability existing at the inter-provenances, inter- and within provenance regions level (A1 and A2), we recommend review of the current provenance regions approved by OM nr.617bis/1.09.2010 and of the transfer rules for forest reproductive materials.
  2. 2. The Norway spruce, Silver fir and Scots pine populations with high genetic diversity and phenotypic plasticity we recommend to be established as basic material for producing of the forest reproductive materials.
  3. 3. Harvesting the seeds in seed stands will be made from plus trees situated at a distance of at least 50 m from each other.
  4. 4. The forest reproductive material used to install forest plantations must come from seed lots harvested from a sufficiently large number of plus trees (at least 30 plus trees).
  5. 5. Establishing of the natural populations of Norway spruce, Silver fir and Scots pine, with a high level of genetic diversity, as “in situ” forest genetic resources.
  6. 6. Identification of the new forest genetic resources within regions affected by various disturbing factors or where there is a risk of alteration of the genetic structure by the introduction of reproductive material of unknown origin.
